Frequently asked questions about car insurance
Is car insurance mandatory in France?
Yes. Article L211-1 of the French Insurance Code requires every owner or driver of a motor vehicle to hold third-party liability insurance, which compensates damage caused to others (other vehicles, pedestrians, property).
What does third-party-only car insurance cover?
A third-party-only policy corresponds in practice to the legal minimum: liability cover (Article L211-1), which compensates third parties after an at-fault accident, without covering damage to your own vehicle. French law does not strictly define the term "third-party only" — its exact scope depends on each insurer's contract.
What's the difference with a comprehensive ("tous risques") policy?
"Tous risques" is a commercial term, not defined by law, for a policy that adds own-damage cover to the mandatory liability cover, including when you are at fault. The exact scope (deductibles, exclusions) varies by insurer.
Can I still get insured if I've been cancelled by a previous insurer, have a bonus-malus surcharge, or had my licence suspended?
Yes. The insurance obligation applies to all drivers, including higher-risk profiles. Some insurers specialise in these profiles. If you are refused cover, you can refer the matter to the Bureau Central de Tarification (BCT), which sets the premium a designated insurer must accept for third-party cover (Articles L212-1 to L212-3 of the Insurance Code).
How do I cancel my car insurance policy?
Under the Loi Hamon (Article L113-15-2 of the Insurance Code), you can cancel a policy of one year or more with automatic renewal at any time, free of charge. Cancellation takes effect one month after the insurer receives your request, and any unused premium must be refunded within 30 days.
What is the bonus-malus system?
The no-claims coefficient, set out in the annex to Article A121-1 of the Insurance Code, changes each year: a 5% reduction after a claim-free year, and a 25% increase per at-fault claim (12.5% for shared-fault claims). It ranges between 0.50 (maximum bonus) and 3.50 (maximum surcharge).
