Frequently asked questions about supplementary health insurance
What is supplementary health insurance ("complémentaire santé")?
Supplementary health insurance is a policy that reimburses all or part of the healthcare costs left after reimbursement by France's national health system (Sécurité sociale) — consultations, hospital stays, optical care, dental care, and more.
What's the difference between a "mutuelle" and a "complémentaire santé"?
"Mutuelle" refers specifically to a not-for-profit body governed by the French Mutual Insurance Code (Code de la mutualité). "Complémentaire santé" is the generic term: the cover can be offered by a mutuelle, but also by an insurance company or a pension/provident institution.
Is supplementary health insurance mandatory?
It is mandatory for private-sector employees, provided by their employer under the generalised company scheme, but optional for self-employed people, retirees, and those without professional activity — who nonetheless remain highly exposed financially without it.
Can I switch supplementary health insurer at any time?
Yes. Thanks to the "infra-annual cancellation" law, you can cancel your contract at any time after one year of commitment, free of charge and without justification.
How do I choose the right supplementary health cover?
The right choice depends on your age, health condition, specific needs (optical, dental, hospital care) and budget. A personalised comparison helps identify the best-suited offer for your situation.
What is the waiting period ("délai de carence") for supplementary health insurance?
This is the period after subscribing during which certain treatments are not yet reimbursed. It is not set by law: its length and existence depend on each contract, and it is generally absent from collective employer schemes.
What is the "100% Santé" scheme?
"100% Santé" allows full reimbursement — by both the Sécurité sociale and the supplementary insurer, with no out-of-pocket cost — for certain defined equipment (glasses, dental prosthetics, hearing aids), provided you hold a so-called "responsable" supplementary contract.
What happens to my supplementary health cover if I leave my employer?
If your departure entitles you to unemployment benefits, you keep your collective supplementary health cover free of charge for up to 12 months, under the portability scheme set out in the French Social Security Code. This is separate from the individual continuation right under the Loi Evin, which takes over afterwards.
