Frequently asked questions about motorcycle insurance
Is motorcycle insurance mandatory in France?
Yes. As with any motor vehicle, article L211-1 of the French Insurance Code requires at least third-party liability cover, which compensates damage caused to others in an accident you are responsible for.
What is the difference between third-party and comprehensive motorcycle insurance?
Third-party cover is the legal minimum (liability only), without covering damage to your own motorcycle. Comprehensive cover adds protections such as theft, fire, glass breakage, or all-accident damage. There is no strict legal definition of these terms: their exact scope depends on each insurer's contract.
Does the bonus-malus (no-claims) system apply to motorcycle insurance?
Yes, the bonus-malus system set out in the annex to article A121-1 of the Insurance Code applies to motorcycle insurance just as it does to car insurance: your coefficient changes each year based on at-fault claims.
Can I cancel my motorcycle insurance at any time?
After the first year of the contract, the Hamon law (article L113-15-2 of the Insurance Code) allows you to cancel motorcycle insurance at any time, free of charge.
Is wearing a helmet related to my insurance contract?
No, wearing an approved helmet is a French traffic law requirement, separate from insurance. However, some insurers offer an optional rider-equipment guarantee (helmet, jacket, gloves) to cover replacement after an accident.
Is theft automatically covered by my motorcycle insurance?
No, theft cover is not included in the minimum third-party formula. Since motorcycles are statistically more exposed to theft, this guarantee is offered as an option in intermediate and comprehensive formulas.
